The Opposite of Self-Reliance 😨

Is anyone truly self-reliant or a we all dependent on others, to some degree?

The opposite of self-reliance.

Hi I’m Brian Pombo, welcome back to Brian J. Pombo Live.

I believe we started in 2019. I started doing this show, excuse me, if I’m awful my dates just off the top of my head, I believe that was the date. That was the year.

We started talking about a lot of things, but I was coming from a perspective of…I was working with clients within the Self Reliance field. So people with products and services that allowed people to become more self-reliant.

These concepts of self-reliance kept coming up in conversation, and so forth. So I created a video that kind of had kind of took on a life of its own.

It’s called Self Reliance is Fake. And it really caused quite a stir because it was kind of an inflammatory title. It was meant to be that way.

It’s not that I very much believe in self-reliance. But the concept of self-reliance being that you are 100% completely reliant on yourself, is a fake idea. That a lot of people who have any type of aversion to the concept of self-reliance, that’s usually what they get caught up on.

I started kind of dissecting that and talking about I had my head, my youngest son on my lap, he was just a baby. And we were talking about this idea.

Well, you can go back and watch that video, I want to kind of hit on the concept, even though I don’t work exclusively within the self-reliance field, and certainly not as heavy as I was then. There is still, self-reliance runs through everything that I do in some way or fashion.

I found that there are not enough people discussing it in a productive manner. And one of the things they don’t look at is they don’t look at what’s the opposite of self-reliance. The opposite of self-reliance is much scarier than the situation if we actually trained, let’s say, we got, I don’t know 10% of the population of the world to become more self-reliant, would that be a bad thing or a good thing?

I believe it’d be a good thing. Because a self-reliant person, it doesn’t mean they’re completely, you know, contained in a bubble, and they just do their own thing, it means that they can, as best as possible survive on their own.

There they have the, it’s more of the attitude. That if it is to be it’s up to me, that I’m going to take the responsibility, not the fault of everything, but the responsibility of doing what’s necessary to feed myself to feed my family to feed, clothe shelter, and to do everything I can for my people.

First, before I go about helping everyone else or asking for anything from anybody else, that I do the best I can at what I do. That’s, that’s kind of in a very loose way, my concept of what self-reliance is, the opposite of self-reliance is dependence. Its absolute dependence on other people.

Now, we are all dependent on each other. Don’t get me wrong, interdependency is his kind of life, that there’s not really a way around it. None of us are really self-contained and really perfect in the way that we are.

We need each other. And when you study personalities, when you study coordination, when you study all these different elements, we noticed that all of us are really good at something, or we’re really good at a wide range of things, but not as good as the people that are focusing on each of those things, if that makes sense.

Naturally, we have natural inclinations toward very specific areas. But that’s not the only thing you need to live. And it’s definitely not the only thing you need to be able to thrive and become better through life, have better nutrition, have a larger business, everything else.

Anyone who’s a business owner or executive that has tried to do it on their own while at the same time needing to hire certain things out knows that you can’t do it all on your own.

You could do a certain amount, you could probably make it to the small millions on your own with it as your own solopreneur business. But to get past that point, you have to become more dependent on other people, but not dependent in the sense that you need them.

For the basics in life, you need them, just like they need you to go the next step together, we can do more than any of us alone. But if each of us has the attitude of self-reliance, it makes it a lot easier if you go the opposite way.

You say we’re completely dependent on each other. Nobody is toeing the line, nobody is taking responsibility. And there’s a race to the bottom when you have that concept of dependency.

You can see it throughout culture, especially if you’re living in the United States during this time period, you can see it’s kind of somewhat built into the culture, especially with younger people.

I think on some hands, it was purposeful by some people, but on a lot of people they don’t realize why their children have this attitude. A lot of it comes from the comfort level that we’ve lived in because of living off of the past, which was more self-reliant, which built up this nice, comfortable, wonderful lifestyle.

We can go off on a tangent on that but in reality, we do have a problem with wanting to be dependent, is that there’s something built into humans. I think, where we really do want to be dependent, it’d be nice if we can just rest and just have someone else take care of me.

There are certain people, who don’t have a choice. You know, if you’re a certain if you’re past a certain age, and your body’s giving out and everything else, you don’t have a choice, you’re dependent on other people.

If you have mental issues or any type of handicap or anything of that sort. You’re dependent on other people, if you’re a child, if you’re a baby if you’re going to be dependent to one extent or another.

You can’t do anything about that but for those of us who can do something about it, we really should.

We got to start with ourselves, take care of ourselves, do what we got to do to be able to build ourselves up and make the world a better place.

But it starts here.

And then helping others helping those people who don’t have a choice and be independent. In that process, it’s not about self-reliance versus absolute dependence. It’s more about that attitude.

If you’ve got the right attitude, if you can find that attitude, I’m going to do everything I can to make the world a better place and I’m not going to ask for anything, and I’m not going to play the victim, for anybody.

If you have that attitude, I think you’ll see that life just gets better.

If you can help promote that attitude with other people. If you already have that attitude, don’t push it on other people, but at the same end, try and bring it out of them because I think we all have the capability of it.

I’d love to find out if this is making sense to you or if or if it just sounds like a bunch of gobbledygook.

Qualities Business Investors Look For: No. 5 🕵️ (Clubhouse Climate)

Part 5 in a series of videos on what what Brian looks for in companies.

Qualities business owners look for number five.

Hi I’m Brian Pombo, welcome back to Brian J. Pombo Live.

I’m gonna point out a few things if you’ve been watching this series on qualities that business investors look for.

One, yes, I have had a haircut. Okay, so that’s one thing you’ll notice.

Another thing, for those of you who are watching versus listening, those of you who are listening, none of this matters. Another thing that the people watching will notice is I’ve got a bloodshot eye, which is really disgusting. You can’t feel it though. This is another injury, for those of you keeping track at home, that Lucas the destroyer hit me in the head this morning. Probably with his head, I don’t even remember exactly what happened cuz he’s such a rambunctious two year old.

I always come on here with new scratches and bumps and scars and everything from my two year old. So this is a new one, so just in case if that’s throwing interview off.

Let’s talk about the things that business investors look for when they’re looking for somebody to partner up with, or somebody to a business to purchase.

This is number five, if you want to watch the other ones, go back and watch the other ones we’ve is a series that will continue. I pretty sure we’re just going to hit the top seven, we’ll see how it goes.

But this is number five, and it is called, CLUBHOUSE CLIMATE.

Now, when I’m talking clubhouse, I’m not discussing the hot new app. So there’s a social app that’s really popular right now here in 2021. That has to do with audio chat rooms that you can get involved with. That’s not what I’m talking about.

But I’m talking about the type of thing that that app creates, which is a clubhouse type environment, you have a club situation fit into your business, this is fabulous, there’s very little that can go wrong. If you have this setup and your business, if you can make it to where it has both and possibly elite flair to it or or a section of it that does but at least a feeling of belonging.

I talk about this a lot in my book, 9 Ways to Amazon-Proof Your Business, specifically chapter five, which is number five here. But chapter five and chapter six, discuss this belonging concept and having the subscription membership concept plugged into your business.

This is a major deal, I have two whole chapters referring to it, you can get a free copy of my book, by the way, if you go to AmazonProofBook.com, or you could purchase a hard bound version over at Amazon, Barnes and Noble or wherever books are sold. So you check that out.

But think about how powerful this is think about all of the businesses that you’re aware of that have a club feeling to them. And some of them they just have kind of a subscription model tied to them your costcos your amazon.com.

Yes, they have somewhat of a club, you know, Amazon Prime, and so forth. But it’s not really any way you don’t go there to meet people you don’t hang out, you don’t feel that you’re part of anything special. So I wouldn’t specifically include them just because they have a membership option, even though it’s very valuable to have something like that tied in with your business because you’re creating consistent flow.

But really, if you can create a club like attitude, Apple had this in the very early days when it was still a very out of the ordinary company. Not everyone had an Apple Computer not everybody had Apple products before it went fully mainstream had very much a club vibe that allowed it to continue in the marketplace on a very high level and sell items like computers that did not that they did not necessarily do a whole lot more than your average PC.

But because they had this different mystique about them because they had basically evangelists as they called themselves out there promoting them from the Macintosh on.

It was very much a club like environment, even to the point that people refer to it as a cult. And if you can get to that level, where you have almost cult like following within your business that is very valuable and something something that can’t be bought it’s not easily put together and it is not.

It’s not also easily destroyed.

Once it’s created, it brings on kind of a life of its own.

Harley Davidson has this. There are many brands that you can see out there that have this cult like following to them and when they become mainstream, it’s even more powerful.

But if you can have that early on in the in your business, as you’re making, as you’re building your business and get larger and larger, it’s it’s invaluable to an investor to come in and be able to play along with that process or to help that process along.

If they have experience in such a thing. I’ve actually worked with a number of companies that have this aura about them. And in fact, some of my clients I’m still working with, that I’m helping them to develop it more and more and create something bigger and better than even what’s there.

If you realize this, you realize the power of it, you can help develop it yourself, and you can attract more partners to be able to make it bigger and better.

So hopefully that makes sense. Tomorrow, we’re going to go over number six. So that’s tomorrow, number six, in our list of qualities of business investors look for come back then, in the meantime, get out there and let the magic happen.

Offer Belonging.

Hi, I’m Brian Pombo, welcome back to Brian J Pombo Live.

Today, I’m very tired. And there’s a good reason why I’m tired and has a lot to do with what I wanted to talk about today. The reason why I’m tired is because I got to hang out with a bunch of people that….many of whom I haven’t seen in years.

It was kind of a family reunion of sorts. An organization I had done some work for and got to know people there rather well and we’re just all kind of getting together and I got to hang out the entire day.

And it was a beautiful day got to hang out outside. I got to visit a place that I hadn’t been to for a while where where I actually proposed to my wife which was nice. Just really good memories.

Really great chance to get get back in touch with people. And so I’m wiped out. I’ve had a nice full day.

It’s been a nice full Saturday. But there’s a there’s something really magical about these memories. And it’s because it’s a double edged sword.

It’s a concept that if you can use it in your business, you will have something that’s so powerful that you can honestly cause people to do wrong things, if you have this element. Not that I’m encouraging you to do that. I’m not encouraging you to do that at all.

I do not want you to encourage people to do bad things. If you have this element in your business, I want you to encourage people to do good things with it, but I want you to know that it exists.

And it is a concept of belonging.

What I talk about offer belonging, it’s a concept that I go through a little bit in my book, the 9 Ways To Amazon-Proof Your Business. Which you can get at AmazonProofBook.com.

Now, this particular way is the fifth way of Amazon proofing your business. If you’re able to offer belonging, it is so powerful that it is honestly, the psychology behind is the same psychology that causes people in mass to do great things together.

When they come together and build something wonderful whether you’re talking about the United States of America or whether you’re talking about any type of situation where you see a bunch of people getting together and doing something great. So much of that is fueled by the feeling of belonging that happens when people come together.

The same thing is true also of Nazi Germany and Hitler. Adolf Hitler was able to give the German people a sense of belonging to a nation, to a race, to a cause a crusade of sorts. It’s used for good and evil.

Belonging is a very, very touchy thing.

And something you really have to be careful with. Because you don’t want to give people a sense of entitlement, or a sense of a sense of righteousness over others, you know, so to speak.

But at the same time, you do want to allow a sense of belonging to exist, especially if you have any type of club or membership element to your business. Because it’s something that we all crave. We all want it to some extent We all want to find people that we feel like we connect with. And that sense of belonging is out there. And you can do it.

Even with an online website. Even with the you know, the most simplest of concepts you can offer belonging somewhere in your business. If you want to know how to be able to offer belonging your business, I have a very specific strategy session that plays to this, but

it’s only available if you get my book, 9 Ways To Amazon-Proof Your Business. It’s at the end of chapter five. So go to AmazonProofBook.com to go see what offering belonging is all about.

And to get yourself set up with a strategy session specifically about how to offer belonging in your business. Hopefully that’s helpful. We’ll be back here tomorrow, go to AmazonProofBook.com. In the meantime, Get out there and let the magic happen.

Who is your tribe?

Who are they? What do they have to do?

Do you actually have a group that follow you in a sense that consider you their one and only way in your space?

Before we get deep into that, I want to promote DreamBizChat.com for all business owners, entrepreneurs, executives of businesses that are in the self-reliance field, meaning you have products and services that help people to become more self-reliant.

If you are looking to take your business from where it is to where you want it to be and you just need help as far as developing a path, a long-term strategy in order to get there, whether it’s in six months, whether it’s in five years, do you have a step-by-step path on how to get where you’re looking to go, especially if you’re a successful business and you’re looking to scale up?

Well, go to DreamBizChat.com watch the video there and see if it’s something that you’d be interested in because I’m offering for possibly a short period of time, a free conversation with me where I will help you develop or at least start your dream business transformation.

What’s it all about?

Go to DreamBizChat.com and check it out. The link is in the description.

Now let’s talk about tribes.

Oftentimes when people are putting together their business, they focus it almost solely around the concept of what their business is as a service or a product and they focus on developing that service and product as opposed to developing who that product is for.

That’s why most of the things I talk about, I take all the way back to focusing back on your perspective, client and customer. You’ve got to think about them as much as possible first because that’s where most of your, your marketing is going to lead you to.

That’s where most of your communications are going to lead you to. Any focus that you have back onto growing your business is gonna have to come back to the WHO.

One of my three pillars that I focus on is called relationship reliant, which means you got to have a relationship in a sense. Even if you don’t actually know who they are, you have to have a relationship with your prospective customers.

You have to put yourself out there either personally or as a brand or as a team of brand or a team of people that are producing a brand. So you really gotta put it out there.

This all comes back to a conversation that I had. I’m sorry, I’m getting distracted. My wife is texting me on my phone while I am attempting to do some form of communication with you.

So let me come back. This all comes back to a conversation that I had with a guy named Uncle Mud.

Seriously, this is what he goes by. Uncle Mud, his real name’s Chris McClellan, but he somehow he picked up this moniker and we talk about it on the show that he’s known as Uncle Mud because he has gotten good at natural building.

So that’s when they put buildings together, made out of what most people will consider useless junk and also mud and something called cob, which is an Adobe like substance of mud. It’s clay and and Straw and so forth that you put together.

He knows all about this stuff. He’s learned how to do it really well and he shows people how to build structures out of it, including a rocket mass heaters, which you’ve never heard of.

It’s worth looking into. It’s really interesting. Pizza ovens, stoves, new and full on houses and cottages all out of very simple items. And his message is much more deeper than mud. It has to do with developing your life and one of the main aspects that we talk about in our conversation is developing a community.

Now, some of this stuff has happened accidentally or has happened serendipitously for him, but you can take these concepts and use it yourself. So think about that.

Go out there and listen to this episode of the off the grid Biz podcast. This conversation I have with uncle mud, that link is also in the description or you can go to off the grid is.com for the Off the Grid Biz Podcast.

I believe it’s podcast number 22. I don’t have it right in front of me but I think that’s where it is. Go check it out. Conversation with Chris McClellan, also known as Uncle Mud. Really great guy. Really interesting conversation.

Tomorrow, I mentioned this quite a few episodes ago, I got a piece of mail that is bringing all types of ideas into my mind on, on the how you should be running your business.

What’s a piece of mail have to do with your business?

Well, come on back tomorrow and you’ll see. So thanks for coming. Get out there and let the magic happen.
