Accurate Thinking πŸ’‘ (Self Development)

Some thoughts on self development and mindset.

Accurate thinking.

Hi, I’m Brian Pombo. Welcome back to Brian J Pombo. Live. Napoleon Hill is a very famous writer from way, way back in the day, wrote, Think and Grow Rich and a whole lot of other classic early books in the field of self-development.

One of the principles he talks about that a lot of people don’t give much attention to is the concept of accurate thinking. And the reason why I’m bringing this up is that I was having a great conversation with some folks tonight that we’re all here in Oregon, we are in the midst of the election season.

So they have the primary election, which is the early election, part of the here when candidates are running against each other in their own party.

When you have nonpartisan races, they may have large amounts of groups of people running at the same time, for example, the governor field is just covered.

I mean, I think there are 25 candidates out of the two major parties, that Republicans alone have 20 Different people running for governor that are on the ballot, okay, let alone those who didn’t make the ballot and are trying to get written in and all that stuff.

It’s pretty amazing to see all this crazy stuff happening when you look at it from a certain perspective. But one of the things that I’ve found with grassroots, I’ve worked a lot with grassroots political organizers through the years.

And one thing I’ve found is that it’s really easy to miss the forest for the trees. And here’s what I mean, it’s really easy to get caught up in the motion and the movement, and the feeling like you’re doing something or the desire to get something done to do something.

It’s not very often that people sit back and say, Okay, well, what are we actually doing?

You know, what have we actually accomplished?

What we set out to accomplish?

Do we actually are we all actually on the same team in terms of what we’re looking to accomplish and all these people I’m working with?

When you’re when you do that, it’s not just something that you do once you have to do it all the time, you have to step back and say, are we accomplishing what we want to now this is just isn’t a political thing.

This just happens to be the situation tonight but I see it all the time at business also.

This is even worse because you’re dealing with the same people who actually should know better. But when you’re in the midst of that, you know, daily hurricane, of just all the stuff you normally have to deal with, and then all the stuff that is coming up recently, and then all the stuff that’s gotten left behind, and you get mixed up and all that garbage of the day to day, when it comes to goals and priorities, and really sitting down most of us do not take the time to sit down and say okay, what did we want to do at the beginning of the month?

Where are we now and how can we change that?

So we don’t have the same thing happening next month. This is rare to happen. It’s rare that someone will take the time to do that. If they do, it’s usually mixed in with a whole bunch of emotion and a whole bunch of other garbage that doesn’t clear things up.

It just makes more tension between personalities and sexes and everything else, you know, it gets crazy. And I understand if you’re in that mess, I understand.

You got to realize that everyone’s in that mess to one extent or another. What you need is somebody on your team, or you need to be that person, you need to be able to step back and say, Okay, what, what are we actually doing here?

Where are we actually going with this?

The situation tonight, going back to that scenario. They’re doing a phone call to get get out the vote. If you think about it, a lot of times when we talk about politics, we talk about voting, it’s just assumed that you want as many people to vote as possible.

In and you just did that’s going to make everything better. If we have more people voting, then that is going to make everything better.

But when it really comes down to it, the more involved you get in in politics, what you really want is more people who are going to vote like you voting and less people voting like the other person votes, or like the people, you you don’t want voting.

It’s really easy to say all Well, yeah, but that’s just callus. And that’s reality. If you pay any attention to politics, you want your perspective to win over.

You no doubt have some moral background as to why your, your position is better than it deserves to win. But that’s, regardless of the facts.

Accurate thinking is, are we getting the ball and taking it across the field, and getting a touchdown with it accurate thinking is, where are we in this process?

Are we actually getting done what we want to get done?

Oftentimes, when you have a large group of really well, meaning people, they could spend a lot of time doing a lot of nothing, or even worse, doing things that take the ball the wrong way on the field, it actually hurts the purpose.

But then you also have to keep very, very broad-minded and say, okay, even if we’re losing today, and even if we’re helping to lose today, are we achieving on one level that’s going to help us win tomorrow and the day after, and next year and the year after?

So once again, that there’s this broad-mindedness to accurate thinking you have to not just take in the narrow focus of the moment, but taking the whole big picture is all part of it.

But it takes somebody making the question, there’s always going to be pushback because people don’t want to believe that they’re wasting their time, or effort.

Wasting their life energy on something, especially if they’ve been working really hard at something, if you’ve ever worked with somebody who’s worked really hard on a project, and then you realize that that project isn’t what it was supposed to be.

Or it’s going in a completely opposite direction, that person feels like Like you’ve ripped their heart out, if you have to tell them that this isn’t going to work, we have to stop doing this, you can’t keep going in this direction. It’s tough. It’s not easy. But accurate thinking doesn’t care about your feelings.

In reality, the reality is something that none of us have complete control over. We but we do have to acknowledge its existence, we have to acknowledge math, it’s there’s a certain object of mathematics.

I’m not talking about anything that has to do with, you know, racial background or anything else goes into it. There is completely objective beyond humanity, concepts of numbers, and mathematics to life.

It’s the closest thing of us trying to create a science out of reality and that reality can’t be ignored for long, or you ignore it at your own peril.

Accurate thinking must happen, if you don’t make it happen.

If you don’t allow the circumstances for it to occur, then reality will will crash down on you eventually, there’s just no way around it. So just a little tip, a reminder, hopefully, to get you moving forward more with asking the right questions against some accurate thinking.

But also, maybe introducing and inviting more people into your organization into your business into whatever it is your cause, is invite those people who have a concept of accurate thinking, none of us are perfect, we all have our subjectivity.

But the more people you can get involved that that are willing to go toward objectivity.

The closer it is, you’ll be able to reaching your goals and dreams and doing everything you want to do in life, which is, I mean, what else is there, right?

So hopefully, this is helpful. I’ve got my book, 9 Ways to Amazon-Proof Your Business.

I am going to be giving a little talk this weekend in Ohio, to a lot of friends and business partners and so forth. I’ll be talking about some of the principles in my book. If you want to get yourself a free copy of my book, you can go to go to AmazonProofBook.com.

Where you can go pick up a hard bound copy. Sometimes they can they’re in the middle of reprinting or whatever but don’t worry, they go pre.

They reprint pretty fast those Amazon folks and my publisher, however they have that that relationship worked out it seems to they seem to get books faster than even I can get them.

So I’ll have some hard copies if you’re gonna be meeting me there in Cleveland, Ohio this weekend. Otherwise, we will see you tomorrow night.

Get out there and let the magic happen.

Reversing Victimhood πŸ‡ΊπŸ‡¦ (Ukraine Fights Back)

Brian talks about the power of reversing victimhood.

Reversing victimhood.

Hi I’m Brian Pombo, welcome back to Brian J. Pombo Live.

I’m a Business Investor, and we have a lot of talks here about business. Both the idea of being a business owner, and also being executives, just the kind of the people who are in charge and how you get there, how do you how do you?

How do you stay happy there and how do you have a more fulfilling life?

I talk about the principles, and the strategies and the tactics necessary to be able to grow and go the next step. And I want to talk about reversing that victim mentality, reversing that victimhood concept, because it’s everywhere right now.

It seems to be I have not seen a person who who claims victim mentality who claims victimhood, who sits in that space, who isn’t troubled, and going the wrong direction.

I don’t think there’s any other way around it see, being a victim, the way I see it, in the most real sense. If you’re a it’s more of an event, it’s the circumstances surrounding an event.

So if I get my car stolen, I’m the victim of car theft. It’s the reference of me having something being done to me, in a specific event, I’m a victim of a hurricane, if a hurricane comes and knocks through my house, there’s nothing that can be done about it.

There’s not a whole lot that can be said about it. I mean, obviously, if someone steals your car, there’s legal issues and everything else, but it doesn’t change who I am, until I adopt victim as part of my personality, part of my characteristic, part of the way that I how I refer to myself, in a sense.

If you see yourself as a victim constantly, it will do no good for you ever. There’s no way to claim being a victim and to come out a winner anywhere in life.

You can’t.

It’s the opposite. It’s a part of the human condition but when you find yourself in that space, of being a feeling like a victim.

That’s really what it comes down to, feeling like a victim when you feel that somebody has done you wrong, it doesn’t matter whether they did you wrong or not.

The feeling is what destroys you, and takes all your power away.

I’ll tell you what, why this got brought up, I had mentioned that I’m part of a book club. We are currently it’s a deep dive book club. It’s very interesting, where we literally will read one chapter for two weeks at a time, and then discuss it both in a Facebook group and a live Zoom meeting that we have.

Right now we’re reading, thinking grow rich, and we are on chapter two. If you’ve never read this book, there’s that very interesting story, where the author Napoleon Hill, his son, Blair was born.

He has no years, he came out he had no ears at all. There is no mechanism for hearing inside his head and something inside Napoleon told him that doesn’t mean he needs to not be able to hear.

That something told him that he should be able to raise his son relatively excuse the term normal. He could raise him as if he could hear. He shouldn’t have to have if anything, he challenged himself to believe that this might be an advantage.

That something that most people would see as a disadvantage could actually be an advantage.

And he believed it so much. He didn’t come right out and say it but then he started helping to raise his son with that point of view that this is actually an advantage that just because he can’t hear the same way other people can, it can be an advantage because people will look at him differently.

It will allow him to stand out. It will allow him to see things in a different light and so on so forth.

There are different ways you could look at it as an advantage and disadvantage.

Oftentimes we refer to this event well I mean look at the terminology and politics today. Hey, were you talking about the advantaged people with, with advantage?

People with privilege, you know that they, they have something better than everybody else. It all depends on how you look at it, you look at things in a different way, a privilege can become a crutch.

A disadvantage can actually become an advantage.

This is what he’s talking about in this chapter and talking about and he, what it ends up, I’m gonna ruin it for you if you haven’t read it. And you don’t want the spoiler to turn this off now, but I’ll tell you what ends up happening because he reveals it pretty quickly within this chapter.

What ends up happening is his son ends up being able to hear without the physical mechanisms to be able to hear somehow his body is able to adapt, and be able to make sense of a whole lot of what’s on the outside without people screaming and everything else. Which early on he can hear him since something but you have to be really close, you have to be talking really loud.

Well, over time, he was able to go beyond that. And it’s an amazing story.

But it’s not about being disabled or anything of that sort. It’s the concept of what if you take something so extreme like that, and you take it in the opposite direction.

The same thing is true of Helen Keller, who he mentions in there.

I mean, here’s a person we would not know who she was if she had not overcome, not overcome. I mean, she still was not able to see she still was not able to hear. But if she was not able to produce amazing thoughts, amazing speeches, and so forth.

Even though when she was young, she was not able to speak, she was not able to hear she was not able to see and then she rose above that.

But without the disadvantage, she wouldn’t have had the advantage.

You see, she would not know who she was. She could be just as brilliant and be able to say a whole lot of the same things.

But it would not have gone anywhere, it would not have stuck as well as it did, because of her disadvantages, or what we claim as disadvantages.

So victimhood, it’s a misnomer.

It’s not true.

It’s not something that’s real, it’s something that gets into our heads.

The same thing is true of the current situation, while I’m filming this is we’re taught to discuss what’s going on in Russia and Ukraine. Where Russia has invaded Ukraine, this is 2022.

At this current time, the situation appeared to be absolutely hopeless, that no one would even really help Ukraine, for the most part in the situation.

Because the President of Ukraine has stuck around, and because a whole lot of them were relatively prepared and are out there fighting. They’ve turned things around, where people are talking differently.

I don’t know how this is gonna turn out.

If you’re watching this in the future, you already know what happened. But right now they’ve taken a really horrible situation and been able to get so much global coverage and so much sympathy from the entire world, including the Russian people.

It’s a completely different situation than we all thought in the very beginning. And things have not completely fallen overnight.

If they’re going to complete defeat, it’s an amazing thing to be able to see this come about, regardless of what side you’re on or otherwise.

And that’s the idea is that victimhood, I’m not sure if I’m making this clear, but victimhood isn’t real. It’s a fault in our head that we lead in.

You got to be careful with those people. Stay away from anyone or anything that’s looking to make you more of a victim and say, those are the people doing it to you.

Those are the people doing it to you and making everyone else out to be the bad guy.

Whereas all you have to do is stand tall and say, I don’t care what they’re doing to me. I’m going to handle what I got in front of me and do my best with what I have. Hopefully, that makes sense. That’s all I got for tonight.

Go check out my book, 9 Ways to Amazon-Proof Your Business. You can get a free copy on AmazonProofBook.com And we’ll be back tomorrow.

Do You Practice Quiet Time? 🧐

Thoughts on the value of finding quiet time in your day.

Do you practice quiet time?

Hi I’m Brian Pombo, welcome back to Brian J. Pombo Live.

Today’s a little more easygoing. This topic is one of those that most people hardly ever focus on when it comes to business. The concept of mindset, most of the time we’re focused on how can we be more productive because it seems to be a thing that’s the most difficult for most people.

I’m not laughing at it because I haven’t had my issues, I have certainly had my issues with being productive and keeping focused keeping on track, making sure you’re paying attention to the right things and not the wrong things, that you’re not obsessing about the wrong things, but you’re paying enough attention to the details.

But so much of what’s going on, and this is a good time of year to talk about it.

So I’m recording this in early 2021 and the thing that is best to really keep in mind when all this motion is happening, you know, everybody’s moving. Everyone’s focused on the next thing on keeping up with their goals and they’re, you know, all of your annual plans, you know.

The tough thing is setting some time aside, to be quiet, to just be calm by yourself.

Not reading, not watching, not listening to anything, setting the phone aside, setting the computer aside, and just be quiet, in a room by yourself with not sleeping, you know Blaise Pascal, this thing said something to the effect of, you know, all of humanity’s problems are based on the fact that we have an inability to sit in a room alone.

I think that’s true, I think a whole lot of what we’re missing in life, is the ability to let your brain idle.

The more I do it, the more I see that I should be doing it more often, you really should do it a couple of times a day.

At least just pull back, your brain is gonna keep running, it’s gonna keep thinking of stuff, but you don’t just quit playing with it, and you back away from the thoughts and just chill out.

You don’t need to empty your brain, you just let it run its course. And don’t follow along with it.

When you find yourself falling along with you pull back out of it. And you just, if you can just keep easygoing and keep everything in perspective, because we just don’t have a whole lot of time here.

That’s been a theme over the last couple years. With all the people in my family and people that I’ve known I’ve been close with that have passed on. It’s just very clear that we don’t have a whole lot of time.

We just got got this little split second to do stuff on Earth, and you do what you can. And you’ll let the rest go.

You just got to sit back and it’s nice to just sit back and just pay attention. So simple idea. I don’t know if you call it prayer or meditation or whatever you have going. It’s a simple idea.

So my friend Patrick reminded me of it this morning on one of his latest podcasts and I just wanted to pass it on to you. It’s a good good reminder.

A good thing to keep in mind. Something I don’t probably don’t talk enough all talk about often enough because it’s certainly a key to me not completely going insane and running off to the circus or what have you.

So, quick idea. Hopefully it helps.

When you’re done taking some quiet time go get a copy of my book, 9 Ways to Amazon-Proof Your Business.

When you’re ready to get engaged when you’re ready to figure out what the next thing is. This is a great way to kind of strategize your business and to keep yourself competition proof. 9 Ways to Amazon-Proof Your Business. Get a Free copy at AmazonProofBook.com

Metacognition and Your Business πŸ§ πŸ‘€ (Power of Critical Thinking)

Brian uses a fancy word to talk about critical thinking in your life and business.

Metacognition and your business.

Hi I’m Brian Pombo, welcome back to Brian J. Pombo Live.

Today I want to talk about metacognition, which is basically the science of, you know, thinking about your thinking, okay. I love this topic, it’s one of my most favorite things to talk about is something having to do with our thinking.

And it all starts with us thinking about what we’re thinking, not about what we’re thinking, but thinking about our thinking or itself, thinking about the thinking process, thinking about how we think, why we think, and everything around that idea.

This is the most some of the most fascinating things that I’ve ever thought about. And considered and actually made some of the largest changes of my life based on the concept of metacognition.

Now I’ve never, honestly, I’ve never used the term metacognition, I think I may have looked at it once when I was taking psychology classes in college but forgot about it.

And just recently, I was looking at things all about thinking about your thinking, and that term came up. So I thought I thought that was interesting.

Besides the term itself, this is something that gets brought up a lot by Dan Sullivan.

If you ever listened to Dan Sullivan, you could find him on a whole lot of podcasts out there, including one of my favorites. So, Welcome To Cloudlandia, this was the one that was that’s hosted with Dean Jackson.

It was also previously called, The Joy of Procrastination.

I’ve discussed it before, Dan Sullivan is the one that heads up that he’s both the creator and the lead mind over at Strategic Coach, where they talk a lot about thinking and stepping back and looking at why we do the things we do and how we can make slight tweaks to be able to create different results in our life.

And this is another thing that came into my mind when I was going back and looking at this book, Keep Going. I’ve talked about this one before previously, keep going by Austin Lleon, Awesome book.

I love Austin’s books, they’re simple, they’re straightforward, very little to read on each page.

So you can make a whole lot of progress quickly and this the idea that he brings up, I don’t always agree with every last idea in here. But they’re definitely causing you to think about what you’re thinking.

This particular page I wanted to bring your attention to, he says pay attention to what you pay attention to. It’s really kind of a microcosm of thinking about your thinking. And I really liked what he says here, I wonder I wanted to read some of this for you.

He says your attention is one of the most valuable things you possess, which is why everyone wants to steal it from you. First, you must protect it. And then you must point it in the right direction.

As they say in the movies, careful where you point that thing. What you choose to pay attention to is the stuff your life and work will be made of my experience is what I agree to attend to psychologist William James wrote in 1890, only those things which I notice shaped my mind.

We pay attention to the things we really care about. But sometimes what we really care about is hidden from us.

I keep a daily diary for many reasons. But the main one is that it helps me pay attention to my life, by sitting down every morning and writing about my life. I pay attention to it. And over time, I have a record of what I’ve paid attention to.

And he goes on and on about the importance of diary or journal writing. Great stuff.

I think the first step is to realize I think we all to some extent or another think about what we’re thinking, think about how we think, think about our thinking and some context, but probably we don’t do it enough and we don’t question it enough.

We don’t question what where thoughts are coming from or whether they’re necessary or whether they’re habitual and everything else and how to go about either maneuvering around them, ignoring them, backing up from them, questioning them, you know, how do you go about doing that, but the first step I think is really paying attention to what you pay attention to.

That comes on a moment-by-moment basis. But it also comes at looking at it on a daily basis and whatever you need to be able to do that.

One of the things that I do is I got it. The easiest way for me to be able to work person through this process, because I’m a business strategist. So I work with different people that own businesses and help them get from point A, where they’re at, to point B where they want to be, right?

And to get you just focused on that point, and taking you day by day and said, Okay, why were we not able to make this step from here to here, what’s getting in our way?

That brings us all back to mindset. And the people that I work with the best of the people that are most open, about digging in there, into their own brain, watching what you’re doing on a daily basis, watching your thoughts on a daily basis, watching your emotions on a daily basis, and not getting obsessed about it.

But quite the opposite, just having enough perspective where you notice it, if you could just start noticing things, your whole life will start changing, I can pinpoint a period of time when I started noticing my thoughts.

And over time, I’ve gotten better and better and better.

At least I hope I’ve gotten better at backing away, and not getting caught up with it with all the things that I’m going through. But in the best-case scenario, being subjective to it. I mean, being objective to it, excuse me, at little Freudian slip there being objective to it being just far enough away, that I don’t have to claim it.

And I can just kind of watch it and see it and see where it leads me and not get take so much credit for everything that goes through your brain as if you intentionally meant for it to be there, right?

I know there’s a little bit of a deeper thing. But if you could start just noticing things, it’ll make a huge difference, of course to your entire life, and then initial and then eventually it’ll, it’ll result in better business, which is what we try and promote here.

So if you really want to build a better business, go check out my book, 9 Ways to Amazon-Proof Your Business. These are more wide range concepts of ways that you can change your business in the long run. These aren’t going to make huge dramatic changes overnight.
