corporate systems, and creativity.

Hi, I’m Brian Pombo. Welcome back to Brian J Pombo. Live,

I’m going to do something a little bit different today, I’m actually going to play a video that was on Instagram.

And it’s a clip out of one of Jordan Peterson’s talks.

I’m not sure if you’ve heard of Jordan Peterson or not, you’ve probably seen him around, relatively controversial person. Says a lot of wild things, whether you agree or disagree with them.

This is one of those that I wanted to toss out there and kind of discuss because it has a lot to do with what we talk about when we’re talking about business.

Take a watch at this real quick.

Do employers look for creative people?

No, not generally, there’s increasing demand in corporations for creative people. But the problem with being creative is that you’re useless at the bottom of the dominance hierarchy.

You’re not there to think outside the box, you’re there to learn what you’re supposed to do and implement it and creative people.

That isn’t what they do. What happens though, to companies is that because they filter all the creative people out at the bottom, and then people start to rise up to the top, you really need creative people at the top, because they are the entrepreneurial types.

And they’re the ones for example, in law firms, the more entrepreneurial ones are the ones that bring in all the business, but it’s also very difficult to nurse them within any system.

Because systems do not nurture creativity, the artist is always the person who stands outside the structure or maybe builds his or her own structure, which is also why it’s hard to evaluate creative people, you can’t if they’re operating within the confines of a system that has an evaluative structure, they’re not creative.

So that’s it. Do corporate that’s really the question is, does the typical corporate structure with the top down issue that businesses eventually if they’re growing, they eventually become somewhat of that structure?

Does it stifle creativity does it automatically tend to destroy itself by having a lack of creativity because it can’t have it within the system that it ends up building?

I think that’s true. I think it’s prettytough to disagree, if you’ve worked in any type of large corporate business, if they are not relatively broken up into subsections. And have, in a sense, smaller companies within a company, if they don’t work that way, then what you end up having is creativity being stifled.

You have a you have a certain amount of creativity at the top at least early on. And then over time, because they get very good at doing a certain thing. It gets to be kind of a rote process, to where people don’t necessarily believe it, they do it because that’s what they were taught. And they were taught what they were taught, and so on and so on. It goes on.

And then as people rise up to the company, like, like Jordan Peterson said, you end up with a lack of creative personalities, you you take away a whole lot of that spark that created the company to begin with.

Because entrepreneurse to have that that creativity, but they also need system in order to allow for growth. So it’s a it’s a balancing act. It’s a dichotomy. And it’s something that all people that run businesses need to watch for, if they care about the long term, life span of their business.

So something to keep in mind as you’re growing ahead. There’s ways around it but it’s a balancing act. This is just part of the the life.

It’s the same reason why government does not sponsor creativity, any type of heavy government work any can’t really if you think about it, who are the most creative people within government tend to end up being dictators.

If they’re really creative, if they’re really being outgoing, they’re either being dictators, or they become absolute heroes. But either way, they’re relatively revolutionary and that could be extremely good.

When you have a government that’s that’s overblown, can be extremely bad when you have a government that becomes overblown because of them.

So these are all things that you have to keep in mind. But no matter what, it’s a structural system thing. And the more you have a system that is universal throughout a company, it starts to lose its lifeforce, it starts to lose its its positive energy. And because of that, you get these dead corporations that that just they function, but they don’t they function from an old soul they function from from the past. It’s a weird thing, but it’s definitely true.

You will see it if you work in enough different style businesses. It’s guaranteed you will run into this.

The thing is to realize there is a way out. There are ways to counteract it. And there’s I can’t even go into any more detail that for tonight, but go check out my book,9 ways to Amazon-Proof your business.

Creatively Drained, While Doing Content Marketing 😐(Idea Starters)

Some thoughts on idea starters when you feel creatively drained.

Creatively drained while doing content marketing.

Hi I’m Brian Pombo, welcome back to Brian J. Pombo Live.

It’s very common, and I think it depends on how much you’re doing, how often you’re doing it and how well organized, the whole process is. But if you’re doing content marketing on a regular basis, and you go through a whole lot at once, more than you’re used to, it can be draining.

You could just feel like, like I did all this stuff, and you just, you need to unwind, or you need to recharge, different people recharge in different ways.

So we talk a lot about content marketing for business owners, and executives of businesses. And then whoever is working on your content marketing, you got to realize, especially if they’re doing it on a daily basis, they’re not always going to be prime.

And so you have to have things organized to be able to work around it, one thing you could do is, there’s a handful of ideas that I could come up with off the top of my head, one thing you can do is have material that’s all ready to go, that is not time specific, that can be plugged in when that person is not at their prime.

And so that’s an availability you have that you also have the availability of easy topics.

So if you’re doing anything similar to what we do on a nightly basis, here, I tend to keep a pile of books, or I have a handful of books that have so much in them that I can pick them up and just grab something randomly.

I mean, here’s a book, this is a I probably shown this to you before, this is 2,548 Wittiest Things Anybody Said.

And I could just grab something out of here, and usually run a story out of it, or a lesson about it or something like that, that we can tie back to what we discuss here.

But I mean, there’s just sometimes it’s difficult. It’s really difficult, and hopefully I don’t show it too much here. But there are certain nights when I just got nothing.

I mean, tonight was pretty close to that, and I’m doing okay, right now.

But when I first started, I’m like, wow, why am I so drained?

I looked at my schedule. Really, since Friday on I’ve been kind of on a creative dump in terms of working with different people and coming up with new ideas.

And in my mind has been racing, ever since probably even while I’m sleeping in terms of contemplating all the all the ins and outs and possibilities that wears on you, eventually you get to a point to where it doesn’t go anymore.

You’ve got to step step back step away from it, you have to consider that if you’re the one producing the content, if you’re not the one producing the content, you have to consider that that person is going to reach that point, eventually, especially if they’re doing it consistently.

So I definitely recommend consistent content, but you have to watch the human element, whoever is in charge of making it realize that they’re not always going to be on the top of their game.

In fact, they all go lame at some point, somebodies attention, and creativity is going to want to go in a completely different direction than where you want them to go. So you have to keep an eye out for that, and you’ve got to expect it. It’s just part of the part of the nature of the beast.

But I’ve always got things that is that are always available. And I’m looking at producing more products as we go ahead, not just books, but I do have this one book, that’s a great, great read.

If you’re interested in learning more about standing out in your marketplace, you can do that with content marketing, but it’s good to have an idea of why and where you’re going with that.

That’s why I made this book, 9 Ways to Amazon-Proof Your Business.

It’s about overcoming competition by standing out. You get a free copy at Amazon proof book.com Digital Copy.

I did a webinar earlier today where we handed out a bunch of physical copies. So it also has a chance for you to get a physical copy there.

You can also just go and buy one off of Amazon or Barnes and Noble, or anywhere else that books are sold online especially.

So we’ll be back tomorrow.

In the meantime, get out there and let the magic happen.

Using Discomfort to Your Advantage

Using discomfort to your advantage. That’s tonight’s topic.

Welcome back to the Orange Office, I’m Brian Pombo. We’re here in Grants Pass, Oregon. It is a gorgeous summer night. I’m really enjoying it.

It’s a bit too nice actually. It reminds me of one of my favorite places in the world. If I had to live anywhere in the world, it would be Maui, Hawaii. I would totally live on the island of Maui.

But if I think hard enough about it, I’ll realize that I could have a place in Maui and I can vacation there and enjoy myself, but I don’t think I can live there long term.

And the main reason why is because if I get too comfortable, all my creativity has gone. Every drive that I have to be able to move forward and do something different in my life drains out of my body and I bet you’re the same way and everyone has different things that kind of puts them in that comfort zone, but you have to be really careful about it.

Really careful.

I’m going to give you a great example because I think it ties back to it, and this was last night, we talked about, Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee. That’s the name of the show. Jerry Seinfeld show on Netflix. And he just had this episode with Eddie Murphy in it.

So I brought up a point yesterday. Go back and watch that.

Today there’s another point that they brought up Eddie Murphy and Jerry Seinfeld talking back and forth about being on stage and how when they did their worse, when they were the most confident and most comfortable. When they just went up there and they didn’t care what happened. That’s actually when they bombed. That’s actually when they didn’t do well. I think this goes across the board.

They said that the nervousness, just even just a little bit of nervousness helped keep them on their toes when they were on stage and made sure they performed to their highest level.

I think this is true across the board. It’s taken me a long time to come to this view. I always knew that getting caught up in your comfort zone was a bad thing and could completely zap you have all your energy and ability to do anything decent.

But when it comes to creativity, a night like tonight, nice warm night where I could just hang out on a hammock outside, it is so demotivating. I didn’t want to come back to the office. I had to go back home, put my kids to bed, everything else.

And I have a late night planned up for myself cause we’ve got a lot of things coming forward that I’ll be telling you more about in the future. But I didn’t want to come back because the whole weather pattern put me in a frame of mind of just giving in, just relaxing and just ease off to sleep.

Comfort’s great for what it is, but don’t get caught up in it and realize that having a little bit of discomfort, a little bit of hunger makes a huge difference to your creativity.

Sometimes a little bit extra, a little bit of extra attention, a little bit of extra nervousness, a little bit of extra of something that we might consider a bad thing.

Conflict could be the thing that you need to engage your creativity.

Whatever that creativity is and I’m not just talking art, I’m talking creativity and everything that you do in life. Anything that’s new and fresh that’s coming from you, a little bit of conflict makes a difference. Walt Disney was famous for….so he organized all his artists and everything to make all the great movies.

Especially the early ones, Snow White, Cinderella, all these hand drawn animated films.

He was famous for pitting two artists against each other. So he would find two people that did not get along and he would put them on the same team. He’d forced them to work together.

This isn’t so that they would eventually get along. The whole purpose was he believed, and the people who were around him would probably attest to this, is that you got kind of a magic creativity that came from the conflict. Whereas if someone got too comfortable their creativity was not as sharp, this is something that you can realize in yourself.

Don’t put yourself in an ideal situation with your day to day life.

If you’re wanting to keep that creativity, you don’t want things to perfect. You don’t want things too comfortable, you’ll lose it. You’ll lose the creativity and the creative edge and the kind of the zest for life.

You probably know people like this who have done well. If you’ve been relatively successful, you probably know people that had been really successful and have gone off and moved off into the sunset.

And you go back and talk to them, the creativity, the spark just isn’t quite there. It’s not quite there because they’re, they don’t have that hunger. They don’t have that edge, that special thing that’s necessary. Keep an eye out for too much comfort in your life.

Too much good food, too much good loving, too much good weather. All that stuff can zap the creativity out of your life and make things more difficult than they would be if you just had a little bit of difficulty in your life at all times.

I’m thinking Princess and The Pea, for some reason. The old story of the mattresses and the princess had to lay on top of this big pile of mattresses and they hit a little tiny pea on the very bottom and they said a princess will always be able to tell when, if there’s any, any level of discomfort whatsoever, even if it’s just a tiny pea at the bottom of a huge stack of mattresses.

Sure enough, this girl could tell and so she was the princess is the old story, you go look it up.

But discomfort has a value in your life. Don’t miss it. If you feel that you’re missing that edge in life, that you’re not quite getting what you want, that you don’t really have the fire. Put yourself in an uncomfortable situation. Don’t make it up.

Put yourself in a uncomfortable situation that you know you could still handle, but it’s just uncomfortable enough and you’ll be able to get over that edge.

Tomorrow, well….before we get to that, hey, go to DreamBizChat.com. You thought I was going to forget I didn’t. It’s right here at DreamBizChat.com. If you are a business owner or an executive in the self reliance field, go to DreamBizChat.com. There’s a quick video there. Go and watch it.

Let me know what you think.

Tomorrow we’re going to be talking about similar issues. Really what it comes down to is another mental state that can change how you negotiate one-on-one.

Whether it be one-on-one sales, whether it be a one-on-one with your employees. All these things really matter and if you don’t pay attention to this one mental state, it could make all the difference between winning and losing on a day to day basis. We’ll see you tomorrow.
