Long Term Goals, Suck 👎

Thoughts on goal setting as Brian brings up some examples from books we’ve covered here before such as, The One Thing, The Slight Edge and Mini Habits.

Long term goals suck.

Hi I’m Brian Pombo, welcome back to Brian J. Pombo Live.

I wanted to talk about long term goals, goal setting the traditional style. I don’t think there’s anything wrong with setting a long term goals, and then laying out the steps necessary in order to get it.

In fact, just the other night I was talking with you about this book, The One Thing and in it, he does a really good job at discussing how to come up with a with a large goal, or both.

Both these gentlemen that wrote it talked about how to set a large goal and how to move yourself back and kind of pull out a big goal and and break it down.

Let’s say you had a five, a five year goal, and we’ve talked about this a lot on here.

Oh, here it is. This is this is from Oh, Chapter 14, Live by Priority.

Goal setting to the now.

Okay has a little diagram here.

You start with a someday goal.

And you break it down to like, okay, well, to get to that someday goal, how would I get there?

Like in five years, where should I be in order to reach that goal?

And then at one year, then you pull it down to a monthly goal?

You know, if I’m going to reach that one year goal, how can I?

What do I need to do every month, and then based on that?

What do I have to do every week, and what do I have to do every day?

Then it comes down to what do I need to do right now, and that works really, really well.

For a very small percentage of the population, I’ll tell you where this type of goal setting works well, it works really well for organizations and groups of people and teams and businesses.

And that’s why I talk about it a lot.

I talk about long term goal setting a lot here because most businesses lack it. But it’s the type of thing that that pulls everybody together and gets everybody on the same track in thinking it’s kind of necessary in order to move this a behemoth like a business or an organization forward, you do need those things.

Here’s where it gets into issues.

It gets into issues personally, when you’re doing it with personal goals.

For some reason, it’s very difficult for most people to do, and I was reading a book, and I’ll tell you more about it in the future. But I because I’m still digesting, and I’ve been done reading it, but I’m still digesting some of the thoughts in it.

And some of the ideas that they presented in that book was a they said that this might have a lot to do with people’s mindset regarding, you know, short term versus long term thinking.

The ability do we you know, does a large percentage of the population really have the ability to?

You know, what is it what is the term it is?

And of course, it’s completely slipping my mind what the actual term is, while I’m talking delay gratification, there it is. delay gratification, do people have the ability to delay gratification.

And it all comes back to this concept of the marshmallow test?

Where I don’t know if you’ve heard this one, they had a bunch of five year olds, and they said and they give them they put a marshmallow in front of them and they said okay, you can have this marshmallow today or tomorrow.

You can have two if you decide not to eat this one today. But if you eat it today, you won’t get one tomorrow.

A good 80% or so eat it while a certain 20% say okay, I’ll wait for tomorrow. And then they they track those people through time.

Supposedly the ones that were able to delay gratification have all these great things that occur in their life because of it. And that’s I mean that that’s a it’s a believable concept, even though there may be issues with that specific study and so forth.

But they take that and then they make they tie it back to the ability for people to be able to goal set and delay gratification within the moment.

I know for myself, for most of my life, I’ve always had a difficult time sticking to goals.

Getting my brain to stick to one idea for longer than a few minutes, let alone a few days is very, very, very difficult for me, until I read.

There was a book that came out and I’ve discussed it here before we had it.

I had a copy, I was showing you a few weeks ago, called, The Slight Edge. It discusses you know, what if you just focus on doing putting one habit into play at a time is one tiny little habit and talks very vaguely about it when this book came out, and I discussed this book.

I didn’t have a copy, I just now got a new copy of it because I let someone borrow when the old copies I haven’t gotten back to one of those books that kind of slips away, Mini Habits, by Stephen Guise.

And I’m going to go through and review this in whole in the future. But the concept of it is, what if you just focus on one tiny little thing, like so miniscule, very easy to do, very easy not to do but so miniscule that, you know, if you really wanted to, you can get that one thing done every day, and just focus on getting done for the day.

And then kind of build a chain of days.

So this is partially based, I heard a great example of this, where they talk about Jerry Seinfeld, when he was attempting to become a better comedian.

He said, I’m going to write a joke every single day, at least one joke, I’m gonna do it every single day and had a calendar, he just put an X on the day, as soon as he was done writing his joke for the day, and just collected that over time, just built on it built on and built on.

And if you can do that, without focusing too much on a long term goal, without having this destination that you need to get to, without having the end of the race with the ribbon that you’re going to get through. And in this great explosion of pleasure that comes from achieving the goal.

Just saying, I’m not focused on getting there, I’m focused on doing the task necessary to go the next step.

Most people can do that, if it’s done properly, and there’s ways to not do it.

And there’s ways that work a little better to do it, I found that the least amount of rewards you can offer yourself is actually tends to work out better.

Celebration is one thing, but not a hit big heavy reward. Because if you have too big of a high, then you end up going low right immediately afterwards.

And if it’s based on daily basis, you’re going to be a yo yo.

This is a very interesting way of doing it as opposed to a long term goal, that short term and I don’t know what you would call it.

This guy calls are mini habit, if you could build on a mini habits making it to where it becomes automated to where you do it.

And it doesn’t take any effort whatsoever eventually, and it doesn’t just take you know, the traditional is to say it takes 21 days. It and they said that that’s not necessarily true.

It’s a good straightforward number that sounds realistic.

But it could be a little longer than that it could be six months, it may take you six months to build up a habit or it can be shorter. It could be just a handful of days, depending on the habit depending on the person.

But we know eventually that you can build a habit. And I’ve done it here. unintentionally. It was one of these things where I just knew that I had to be consistent with it long enough, and I started doing these videos.

These started out as videos that you may also be listening to this on audio because we take the audio from the videos and put them out over podcasting.

But it’s one a day and that’s all it is, and my producer Sean E. Douglas, he puts it out there and does the hard work on this stuff, every day.

It’s just one a day.

One a day he goes through the steps one once a day, I go through the steps of taping this, putting it through the system going through. I’ve got to specifically during this period of time.

I’ll tell you a little bit behind the scenes, we take this video, I then have to add on the image that you’re seeing if you’re watching this that says AmazonProofBook.com that’s for my free book you go check that out AmazonProofBook.com, 9 Ways to Amazon-Proof Your Business and I add that little title on here.

I cut it if it needs to on the on the ends, tighten it up, and then I take that converted.

I then put it through another converter to take it from the mov file that the iPhones create and turn into an mp4 file. I upload that into Dropbox and then Sean takes it from there.

Well that’s something it’s just something we do day after day after day after day. And now it’s like clockwork, I can’t stop myself from doing it.

We’ve already gone way over on this once I’m cut it loose.

You have a great night. Get out there and let the magic happen.

Content Marketing implementation.

Hi I’m Brian Pombo, welcome back to Brian J. Pombo Live.

Let’s talk about implementation of content marketing, because we’ve been talking a little bit about content marketing, what is it, what’s it take to do it, how do you want to line it all up?

How do you kind of define your goals with content marketing?

And now we’re going to talk about implementation, because it really is one of the toughest things that when it really gets down to it is, for one thing, you got to have somebody on your team, hopefully, it’s you.

But if not, you’re going to want to run that person through this concept of of implementing, because they have to commit to a really good solid period of time, before you see any results.

That’s what content marketing is all about.

Even if you’re running paid ads, and running your content through that either way, you’re really going to want to give it some time, for it to catch on. And for it to do what you want it to do. It all depends on really what you expect out of it.

If your expectations are low, then it doesn’t matter how long you do it. But if there if you’ve got very specific metrics to go by, in terms of you’re looking to have this type of relationship or this type of thing come back to you, then you’re going to want to run it for a while to really achieve that, because you can do it.

The real thing, you got to give people time, to relate with the personality to relate with the message to relate with the brand, everything that you’re bringing out there, you got to give it time. And honestly, you ought to make it a major piece of what you’re doing of ongoing marketing, you gotta commit to it, I’ve been doing these shows, were over 700.

Now, just about daily, every once a while we’ll miss a day. But for the most part, it’s been daily and we’ve been doing it over two years now. And it’s just go go go go go.

Well, almost two years or whatever, I don’t even I’ve lost track of time you do the math.

So we’re doing really good with it. I’ve really enjoyed it.

There’s a whole bunch of things that you don’t realize until after you’ve been going for a while. But it all comes from committing to it.

And I am not the I don’t know about you, maybe you’re the type of person, this is what you got to determine on your own, you got to determine whoever is going to be the one doing it, or the team that is doing it.

They have to you have got to have somebody on board, that’s going to make sure it gets done. Because until it becomes a habit, it’s going to take time to do that there’s got to be someone on top of it that can make sure it gets done. If you don’t have someone like that.

Then I’m going to talk about how you go about dealing with it. Because honestly, 90% of you out there are like me, you’re not the type of person that does the same thing. Day after day after day after day, you got to switch it up, you got to try something new, you’re you’re impatient, you’re tension, you’ve got an attention deficit and everything else.

So let’s talk about how to go about doing it, this is the best way I have found of doing it, I’m going to give you three resources, three resources that have changed my life, in terms of how I see everything that I do, but especially when it comes down to getting something done that I know is going to take a good chunk of time, have a good six months, year, two years, three years, five years, 10 years.

If I want to build something into my lifestyle, this is how I go about doing it. So yes, we’re talking about content marketing, but we’re also talking about how to trick yourself into doing what you know you’re supposed to be doing. And I am the worse at this type of thing. Honestly, I can’t, I have the toughest time being consistent on anything.

And so I have to build a team around me to help me out with that. But I also have to do these steps. And I’ll talk about that in a second. By the way, I just noticed I’m looking at the camera, and I’m catching a view of how I look.

I probably my eyes are all bloodshot, because it looks like I’ve been smoking all day. In essence, i have i’ve been outside. And it’s one of these days in Oregon called a burn day.

So it’s a day where it’s wet enough outside and the heat is low enough that everybody’s out burning their piles of waste, including myself, so we were out in the country, so waste meaning, you know, downed trees and and and you know, natural waste. So you put it in a big pile and you burn it and you pay attention to it.

So I’ve been out in the smoke all day. That’s why I looked this way. It’s a Sunday. This is what we do here on the show. So let’s talk about what these three resources are first one, the slight edge, this was the one that really set my whole life on. On this track of understanding habits. I’ve read a whole bunch of books on habits.

This was the first one that really spoke to me as to how you go about doing this and why, and the physics behind it and everything else. This is one of the first edition copies, I got this.

Actually, this not sure if this was my actual copy or someone, someone else because I bought it off of a couple other people. Because I loved it so much I like like passing it on to other people. 2005.

When this one came out, there’s been other additions that have come out since I’ve got a slightly thicker edition that has extra stuff from the later ones. Great book, slight edge, this is a great, it’s an easy read, it’s a quick read, and it really hones in on the point.

Now if you want to go a little bit deeper into it and read something that’s probably even better written was a compound effect by Darren Hardy. I don’t have my copy right here.

But compound effect by Darren Hardy is a great book that covers a lot of the same material, and covers that from a different angle, and will really get you going.

Now, if you want to say okay, that’s all fine and good. But I can’t quite get a handle on this. There’s one that goes directly into how to apply it into your life. It’s a simple book.

It’s one of those that you don’t you don’t think you want to think it was such a simple title, and a simple little cover that it would do what it needs to do. But this book is amazing. It’s the simplest book out of all of these. In fact, you go straight to it, if you just want to get down to the meat, Mini Habits.

That’s many as a miniature, Mini Habits, by Stephen Guise, I think I’m saying his name correctly. Mini habits by Stephen Guise, check out that book.

That tells you specifically how to go about putting these things into place. And it’s all about starting small, and just a little bit every single day, which is what I’ve done here, I put these out on a regular basis, I’ve made it to where it kind of duplicates itself.

I’ve got our producer, Sean Douglas, who helps out, put sending all this stuff out all over the internet and uploads it and sends it all over all over the place on a daily basis.

You got to have a team of people, if you don’t have the focus to be able to do it, do the pieces you can do and outsource the rest as best as you can. It wouldn’t happen otherwise, for me I can I can speak for that, for sure.

Now, those are the three books. Hopefully that makes sense to you. Get out and learn how to do these things. If you don’t already know how to implement habits, find out how you can do it.

I guarantee you if I could do it, you can do it. guaranteed that while you’re at it, if you haven’t gotten a copy of my book, 9 Ways to Amazon-Proof Your Business, you can get a free copy over at AmazonProofBook.com.

We’ll be back here tomorrow, maybe talking more about content marketing, go and watch my other material out on content marketing. It’s it’s a big piece of the puzzle.

Because everything a whole lot of what we’re doing now comes back to content marketing. That’s how you go about standing out and that’s what I do on the stand out artist and I’m going to help you do the same thing in your business.

Once again, AmazonProofBook.com we’ll be back here tomorrow night. In the meantime, get out there and let the magic happen.

Be Consistent.

Hi, I’m Brian Pombo, welcome back to Brian J. Pombo Live.

Today I wanted to talk with you about the second way to Amazon proof your business, which is what I call being consistent. It comes from developing really a focus, developing a plan and then just sticking with it long enough to see it come to fruition. And I give a great example in the book, 9 Ways to Amazon-Proof Your Business. You can get that by going to AmazonProofBook.com.

I am going to tell you right now, being consistent is on all different levels. And it’s not the easiest thing to do. Sometimes there’s such a thing as being consistent within your business, your whatever systems you’ve set up, doesn’t mean you have to be consistent, but the pieces that are dependent on you. Those pieces have to be consistent as well.

So you have to look at how do I make that a lot of the book plays off of how you make your business consistent. But if you’re talking about you, I’d suggest really developing good habits.

A lot of people talk about this discipline, you know, and that word always bothered me, because it always sounded like so much work and willpower and all that.

And I only have…I’ve only had so much of that my whole life. I could do it for a little while, but I could just never quite go all the way and you always feel lesser than if you can’t just keep driving away at something.

The way you do it though, the way to overcome that to get around willpower and discipline is habits. If you can learn how to develop habits, not in a in a real really rigid way, but in a very easy going, straightforward way, then you can really develop consistency in your life.

There’s three books. I just mentioned this to a group of friends recently. And I’m going to mention it to you. There’s three books I recommend on the development of habits. And I’ve read quite a few.

Actually I have…do I have the other one? Oh, yeah, Power of Habit by Charles Duhigg is a good one.

But that’s not one of the three I’m going to recommend. That’s a good for understanding the chemistry behind it and the background of habits. And, but it’s, it’s very theoretical, these other books are more directly to how you can develop habits.

So one is The Slight Edge, by Jeff Olson. That’s a great one. I really like that one. That’s the one that really introduced me to how to develop habits without making it be a hard thing. Just changing little things over long periods of time.

And you could create consistency that way.

Another one, The Compound Effect, by Darren Hardy. That’s another really good one, very similar The Slight Edge, just a different tone to it and everything and he covers a couple different areas in that one. That’s a great one.

And the third one is mini habits mini as in like miniature M I N I, Mini Habits, by I believe it’s Stephen Guise is the author on that one. Mini Habits, a little book, but really, really powerful.

I really like this book because he takes the ideas of those other books and says, Okay, now how do you go about actually putting them into play today? How do you do that?

And he gives a couple great examples just in that book. That’ll be with you forever. I mean, you go through those three things. If you have a issue with personal discipline, those three books are going to be really helpful and help you to create consistency in your business.

If you’d like to be able to create it on the systems into things to make sure that your business is consistent even when you’re not around, go check out 9 Ways to Amazon-Proof Your Business, my new book. Like I said AmazonProofBook.com. AmazonProofBook.com. You get a free copy.

Okay if you go through and get a three FREE copy also gives you the option to get a a hardback version and audio version on the on the next deal which you got to get the free copy for so check that out. And then there’s also I’ve got I’ve got another one another place you can get it is over at Amazon.com.

You could you literally buy it at Amazon. com if you want to get it you’ll probably get it quicker, because the other way you’re going to have to get it from me, but either way, go check out AmazonProofBook.com and I’ll be back tomorrow with another quick tip and You have a great night. In the meantime, get out there and let the magic happen.
