Stuck, Comfort, Corollary 💡 (Defeating Your Comfort Zone)

The value of working while being uncomfortable.

Stuck, comfort, corollary.

Hi I’m Brian Pombo, welcome back to Brian J. Pombo Live.

I love talking about the psychology behind what makes us do things or not do things because it seems to be a big piece of my life up until now. It seems to also be a big piece of other people’s lives that I work with.

I’m a Business investor, I work with a lot of different types of businesses.

Over time I both look into purchasing businesses and also come in as a partial investor. I work on situations of equity a lot of times, and this is a thing I run into over and over and over again with business owners.

Most business owners that are either looking to sell their business or are looking to take their business to the next level, so to speak, break it free from where it’s at.

It’s because of this concept of they’re stuck and if you feel like you’re stuck at any point, I’m going to bring up something that always and I haven’t found. I have not found an exception to this quite yet.

If you’re stuck in your business, you can’t get it to grow any further. You can’t get it, you can’t feel like it’s doing anything more for you.

If you’re in that zone, you’re also stuck so to speak, in comfort, or in the comfort zone.

You’re comfortable, almost guaranteed.

So just give you an idea of how little graph here and I found this, this is part of being a packrat, I just found this in my office, I don’t remember where it came from.

This is actually a Sharpie, but it’s a mini Sharpie, I don’t know, quite the use of having a mini Sharpie other than maybe putting it on your keychain. These people walk around with a big ball of keys and, and knickknacks.

I imagine this is what a person would use this for, I don’t know if they still sell these things but this was the only Sharpie I could find. So probably gonna throw it away after this because it’s not that not all that useful to me.

Here’s the idea over time. If you’re talking if we were to talk about comfort level. So as you get started, let’s use business as an example.

This can happen anywhere but business is a great place to start. So if when you start your business, you’re really uncomfortable and it takes really a long while to break free of to get any type of comfortability and then you start getting good at it, and you start feeling more and more comfortable.

Then you’re and then pretty soon you’re it’s it gets really, really easy. And that’s a good thing. That’s kind of what you want, right?

That’s what you want out of business. But here’s the other thing that that occurs at the same time, is it’s when you’re the least comfortable, you also feel the least stuck because you’ve got nowhere else to go but up.

You’re uncomfortable. And so if you were to take it the other way, when you’re talking, when you’re talking being stuck, and what will the opposite of stuck be kind of momentum. You’re really at your own momentum, I can’t think of another word to use right now. But you’ve got a movement going right here.

You and your idealism is at its highest, the more comfortable you get, the lower that gets. It’s a strange thing. They’re inversely related. So, comfort and, and a happy momentum.

They go against each other. And the more comfortable you get, the less momentum you get and somewhere down here you get stuck. Your comfort is all over high.

It’s funny, it’s not that you’re necessarily feel good about being comfortable. Comfort isn’t necessarily a good feeling. It’s just a stable feeling. And the idea that you don’t want to rock the boat and you don’t want to go back to this time when you were uncomfortable right it’s necessary to be a little uncomfortable.

Now, that doesn’t mean that if you get into the situation, here’s a, it’s based on a conversation I was having earlier today with my friend Beverly, who we’re working on working on a business project together.

I think I’ve mentioned her before, she’s looking at selling a business. And she’s at this point to where she is, she knows she’s going to hit this comfort wall. And she doesn’t want to be there.

I said, the only way out of that is is discomfort, right?

You have to put yourself in a situation, not where you are dreading it, or that you feel horrible, or that you’re hating life. That’s not directly related to the comfort concept that comfort is not by happiness.

Some people confuse these, they think if they’re comfortable, they’ll be happy. If they’re uncomfortable, they’ll be unhappy. It’s also something that’s slightly inversely related, being a little uncomfortable, is very healthy and it leads you in a positive direction.

So if you’ve, if you feel stuck in your business, look at where the comfort level is, and find a way out of it. Sometimes that means selling a business. That’s okay because someone else might be able to use that business better, you may have already taken it as far as it can go for you.

So you might want to look at that you may want to look at bringing on another partner, somebody that can challenge you a little bit with your ideas and add a little bit of spice to your business, maybe switch it up a little bit, change it up, maybe a consultant investor like myself, someone like that.

A third thing that you may want to do is just in the thing and not sell it, maybe it’s not gonna be worth it to anybody else. I mean, it’s, it’s honestly, it can happen.

All these things, these are things you really ought to consider.

Maybe you ought to consider having another business if your business already runs on its own.

Maybe you just need to step away, have it continue to run on its own, or do whatever you can to have it run on its own, start a new business, start a new hobby, start a new process over here, something that’s new, something that’s different, something that’s uncomfortable or will add a different element into your life. That will make sense. It’s tough.

It’s really easy to see in other people, but it’s tough to see in ourselves. It’s tough to acknowledge.

There’s a part of us that doesn’t want to acknowledge that we’re comfortable. But comfort slows everything down. And it really does keep you in a in a mellow hole. If you I’m not quite sure how else to explain it.

But a friend of mine used to work in government. And he had kind of risen to the top and had built, it had kind of built things up to where he didn’t really have to do much of anything. If anybody’s ever worked in government, you can get into these spaces where they pay you to just drink coffee. So he was paid to just drink coffee.

He said it was really at a point where he just he had to make sure he got into work just so he can make sure that everyone else was sitting around and drinking coffee. And he explained it as golden handcuffs.

He said they were paying him just enough that he couldn’t walk away and move and go and do something else. But at the same time he felt trapped he felt completely trapped. And that these are the situations that comfort does to us so don’t fall for it move on find a way out of it. If you’d like to chat about it, go check out my website, BrianJPombo.com.

The secret to breaking through the comfort zone.

Hi I’m Brian Pombo, welcome back to Brian J. Pombo Live.

You getting a little bit of a handheld shaky flavor in this episode, because I am holding the phone in my hand. And I just got done doing some future episodes that you’ll get to see these will be cut up.

This is the interview process that I’ve been talking about doing. And I’m not going to reveal who I did it with. But it was a great gentleman and it’s going to be a lot of fun to take this and break it up into pieces for future episodes.

I think you’ll get a lot out of it. If you’ve gotten anything out of the videos we’ve done so far. If you haven’t, hopefully, you’ll get more out of this one. Because it’s not just me sitting around talking about me and my ideas.

This is somebody that I can really dig in and ask them what they think about things, which is really cool. So I’m really happy that that’s coming up.

But this didn’t come through on its own. This isn’t one of those things that just automatically happened, I had to break out of my comfort zone to do it.

Well, just like I did need to do with every podcast that we’ve started just like I need to do to be able to start doing these on a regular basis, which I never mentioned, we’re over 700 videos, okay.

Over 700 videos and audios out there all catalogued over at BrianJPombo.com or wherever you happen to be watching this.

But let’s get to the point, how do you break out of your comfort zone, what is one of the main secrets of breaking out of the comfort zone, I found one that works well for me, I don’t know if it’ll work for you. But across the board the people that I’ve known that have gotten really good at breaking out of their comfort zones, this is a crucial element.

And it’s one that I neglected for a long time. Because I tend to be kind of a do it yourselfer get out there, pound through it, knock your head against the wall type of guy. And this element is having some type of running mate, having a partner that helps out and keeps you on track, and helps push you to do the things that you know that you need to get done. So crucial. If you’ve got a team of people even better, if you’re a business owner that already has a team of people, kudos to you.

But make sure they know that they can get in your face about things and make sure that you get things done, you’ve got to give them that authority, you have to have people around you that aren’t scared of you that are willing to tell you what needs to happen and make sure that it happens on time and gets moving.

Otherwise, it’s just natural for most of us to stick to our comfort zones. It’s just natural. But you always have to have breaking out points every little point in time, you’ve got to have the ability to be able to break out a little bit if you got too much growth in a short period of time, you’re just talking about suffering.

If you’re if you’re looking to go beyond the suffering and just just have little tiny bits of suffering, just in order to be able to get your way through just being a little bit uncomfortable.

My way, the ways that I’ve always had the greatest amount of growth is when I had someone there with me, someone there to keep help keep me on track. My someone specifically that I’m discussing here on a professional level is Podcast Producer, Sean E. Douglas, who we talk about often he has been on the show a whole lot.

But hopefully in the future, we’ll get him on here. But he’s been a big piece of what makes all this happen behind the scenes. And I really appreciate him and in every business that I own in every element that needs to happen, there has to be other people to be able to take me that next step.

One thing I found it’s very difficult to do on my own, I usually have to whether I forget whether I’m too comfortable, whatever, there usually has to be something else there that makes it happen. So that’s a little tip for me to you.

Hopefully that’s helpful to you. Hey, if you haven’t got a copy of my free book, 9 Ways to Amazon-Proof Your Business it’s not a free book.

I mean, you can go and purchase it and it’s well worth the money. It’s well worth beyond the money if it’s if it’s a topic you’re interested in which is overcoming competitive forces.

You can go to Amazon.com or anywhere to get a copy of it but if you are interested in getting a copy right now, digital copy for free, go to AmazonProofBook.com I’ll be back here tomorrow. In the meantime, get out there, get uncomfortable and let the magic happen.

Are you challenging yourself?

Hi, I’m Brian Pombo. Welcome back to Brian J. Pombo Live.

I was working with a friend tonight. And I’d mentioned previously that I was helping out with some local politics and national politics and stuff like that. And we’re both doing things locally for it.

I love seeing volunteers, people that have never done things before or haven’t done type of things that we’re doing, like one of the things we’re doing is making phone calls.

And I’m not gonna get into, you know, which side or anything else, that it’s not important. What’s important is that you put yourself out of your comfort zone as often as possible.

As soon as you feel too comfortable, you’re not growing, you’re not moving to the next level. And I have a friend that had never sat down and made these type of phone calls before or no time recently. And they’re really good exercise to be involved in because no matter what you’re going to get people that don’t want to be called, you know, get people that do want to be called, but don’t like the person you’re talking about, or the measure you’re trying to promote or whatever.

And no matter what you’re going to come across adversity with the situation.

It’s great, it’s really good to come in contact with that type of thing so that you can build up resistance to it. So my friend was doing it did two nights in a row.

The first night, the her anxiety was so heavy, that she said she she was just starving, hungry, even though she normally wouldn’t be at that time at night, she was starving afterwards, she said it was because she was so anxious about the situation.

Then tonight, she went through the same situation felt a lot better. It’s getting in the groove of things, and everything is just there’s so much that you can get from pressing yourself out of your comfort zone. So in that last few videos we were talking about, and we do these these every night, if you’re new, we get together and we talk about these principles and strategies and tactics that you can use in your business or to build a business from scratch.

So we’re talking about starting a new business, doing something new, or starting a new piece of your business, starting a new project, and how these type of things can really have the mindset that you have to be in when you first start out.

And I want you to really think about if you’re thinking of doing something new, I want to encourage you to go for it.

Just move forward on it, especially if you cover those first three questions that I mentioned in the last three videos, if those are all for affirmative, you’ve got to press forward. Because the whole thing can go bust the whole thing, you haven’t really you don’t have any control over whether it works or not.

It may not work and it may not have nothing to do with you. But you’ll never know unless you go out there and move forward with it.

I don’t care if you’ve been successful in 100 other businesses, if this if there’s something holding you back, but that something is your comfort zone, you need to get over it, you need to get through it.

And I know you’ve heard all this before.

This is not I not acting like I have any special knowledge here. Okay. And it’s always something I’m challenging myself about. And when I hear that encouragement from others, it helps take me to that next level. So hopefully I can help be then encouragement for you tonight.

Hopefully it’s helpful.

Using Discomfort to Your Advantage

Using discomfort to your advantage. That’s tonight’s topic.

Welcome back to the Orange Office, I’m Brian Pombo. We’re here in Grants Pass, Oregon. It is a gorgeous summer night. I’m really enjoying it.

It’s a bit too nice actually. It reminds me of one of my favorite places in the world. If I had to live anywhere in the world, it would be Maui, Hawaii. I would totally live on the island of Maui.

But if I think hard enough about it, I’ll realize that I could have a place in Maui and I can vacation there and enjoy myself, but I don’t think I can live there long term.

And the main reason why is because if I get too comfortable, all my creativity has gone. Every drive that I have to be able to move forward and do something different in my life drains out of my body and I bet you’re the same way and everyone has different things that kind of puts them in that comfort zone, but you have to be really careful about it.

Really careful.

I’m going to give you a great example because I think it ties back to it, and this was last night, we talked about, Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee. That’s the name of the show. Jerry Seinfeld show on Netflix. And he just had this episode with Eddie Murphy in it.

So I brought up a point yesterday. Go back and watch that.

Today there’s another point that they brought up Eddie Murphy and Jerry Seinfeld talking back and forth about being on stage and how when they did their worse, when they were the most confident and most comfortable. When they just went up there and they didn’t care what happened. That’s actually when they bombed. That’s actually when they didn’t do well. I think this goes across the board.

They said that the nervousness, just even just a little bit of nervousness helped keep them on their toes when they were on stage and made sure they performed to their highest level.

I think this is true across the board. It’s taken me a long time to come to this view. I always knew that getting caught up in your comfort zone was a bad thing and could completely zap you have all your energy and ability to do anything decent.

But when it comes to creativity, a night like tonight, nice warm night where I could just hang out on a hammock outside, it is so demotivating. I didn’t want to come back to the office. I had to go back home, put my kids to bed, everything else.

And I have a late night planned up for myself cause we’ve got a lot of things coming forward that I’ll be telling you more about in the future. But I didn’t want to come back because the whole weather pattern put me in a frame of mind of just giving in, just relaxing and just ease off to sleep.

Comfort’s great for what it is, but don’t get caught up in it and realize that having a little bit of discomfort, a little bit of hunger makes a huge difference to your creativity.

Sometimes a little bit extra, a little bit of extra attention, a little bit of extra nervousness, a little bit of extra of something that we might consider a bad thing.

Conflict could be the thing that you need to engage your creativity.

Whatever that creativity is and I’m not just talking art, I’m talking creativity and everything that you do in life. Anything that’s new and fresh that’s coming from you, a little bit of conflict makes a difference. Walt Disney was famous for….so he organized all his artists and everything to make all the great movies.

Especially the early ones, Snow White, Cinderella, all these hand drawn animated films.

He was famous for pitting two artists against each other. So he would find two people that did not get along and he would put them on the same team. He’d forced them to work together.

This isn’t so that they would eventually get along. The whole purpose was he believed, and the people who were around him would probably attest to this, is that you got kind of a magic creativity that came from the conflict. Whereas if someone got too comfortable their creativity was not as sharp, this is something that you can realize in yourself.

Don’t put yourself in an ideal situation with your day to day life.

If you’re wanting to keep that creativity, you don’t want things to perfect. You don’t want things too comfortable, you’ll lose it. You’ll lose the creativity and the creative edge and the kind of the zest for life.

You probably know people like this who have done well. If you’ve been relatively successful, you probably know people that had been really successful and have gone off and moved off into the sunset.

And you go back and talk to them, the creativity, the spark just isn’t quite there. It’s not quite there because they’re, they don’t have that hunger. They don’t have that edge, that special thing that’s necessary. Keep an eye out for too much comfort in your life.

Too much good food, too much good loving, too much good weather. All that stuff can zap the creativity out of your life and make things more difficult than they would be if you just had a little bit of difficulty in your life at all times.

I’m thinking Princess and The Pea, for some reason. The old story of the mattresses and the princess had to lay on top of this big pile of mattresses and they hit a little tiny pea on the very bottom and they said a princess will always be able to tell when, if there’s any, any level of discomfort whatsoever, even if it’s just a tiny pea at the bottom of a huge stack of mattresses.

Sure enough, this girl could tell and so she was the princess is the old story, you go look it up.

But discomfort has a value in your life. Don’t miss it. If you feel that you’re missing that edge in life, that you’re not quite getting what you want, that you don’t really have the fire. Put yourself in an uncomfortable situation. Don’t make it up.

Put yourself in a uncomfortable situation that you know you could still handle, but it’s just uncomfortable enough and you’ll be able to get over that edge.

Tomorrow, well….before we get to that, hey, go to DreamBizChat.com. You thought I was going to forget I didn’t. It’s right here at DreamBizChat.com. If you are a business owner or an executive in the self reliance field, go to DreamBizChat.com. There’s a quick video there. Go and watch it.

Let me know what you think.

Tomorrow we’re going to be talking about similar issues. Really what it comes down to is another mental state that can change how you negotiate one-on-one.

Whether it be one-on-one sales, whether it be a one-on-one with your employees. All these things really matter and if you don’t pay attention to this one mental state, it could make all the difference between winning and losing on a day to day basis. We’ll see you tomorrow.
